British naturalisation is the legal process of becoming a British citizen if you are not British by birth. As a naturalised citizen, you will be eligible for a UK passport, have the same rights and privileges as a British person, and be free of immigration control, allowing you to live, work, access public funds, and travel in and out of the UK without a visa.

Eligibility for British Naturalisation

General Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or EU Settled Status for at least 1 year.
  • Must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen and have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.

Specific Requirements

  • For those with ILR or EU Settled Status:
    • Must have resided in the UK for at least 5 years.
    • Must have held ILR, Settled Status, or Indefinite Leave to Enter for at least one year.
  • For those married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen:

                 Must have lived in the UK for at least 3 years

Additional Requirements

  • Be over 18.
  • Physically present in the UK 5 years before applying.
  • Not outside the UK for more than 450 days in 5 years or 90 days in the last 12 months.
  • Prove knowledge of English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic.
  • Pass the Life in the UK test.
  • Be of good character and sound mind.

Application Process

  1. Complete the online form (AN1).
  2. Provide two referees.
  3. Pay the fee (£1,330 + £19.20 biometrics fee).
  4. Attend a UKVCAS service point for biometrics if required.
  5. Upload supporting documents.

Dual Nationality

  1. UK allows dual nationality, but check if your other country permits it.

Refused Applications

  1. Options include a fresh application, Administrative Review, appeal, or Judicial Review.
